A Message from the Leadership Academy Chair

Leadership in emergency medicine extends far beyond the walls of the emergency department. Every day, emergency physicians influence patient care, shape healthcare systems, advocate for our specialty, and strengthen the communities we serve. As our profession continues to evolve, it needs leaders who are prepared to meet new challenges, inspire others, and help shape the future of emergency medicine.

The Florida College of Emergency Physicians’ (FCEP) Leadership Academy was created to develop those leaders.

This year-long program combines leadership education, networking, and hands-on organizational experience to prepare participants for meaningful leadership roles within FCEP, their hospitals, their communities, and organized medicine. Through guided experiences and direct engagement with FCEP’s leadership, you’ll gain practical insight into how our organization operates while developing the skills and relationships that will support your professional growth for years to come.

One of the Leadership Academy’s greatest strengths is the people you’ll meet along the way. FCEP is home to exceptional physician leaders representing every facet of emergency medicine. Throughout the program, you’ll build lasting relationships with colleagues who will challenge you, encourage you, and help you discover new opportunities for involvement and leadership. These connections often become some of the most valuable and enduring outcomes of the Academy.

The program also offers a unique opportunity to become actively involved in the work of FCEP. Participants attend Board and committee meetings, observe organizational leadership in action, and contribute to initiatives that advance emergency medicine across Florida. These experiences not only deepen your understanding of organized medicine but also position you for future leadership opportunities within FCEP and beyond.

The Leadership Academy has helped launch many of FCEP’s most influential leaders. Numerous graduates have gone on to serve on the FCEP Board of Directors, lead committees, represent Florida within ACEP, and hold leadership positions at the local, state, and national levels—including several FCEP Presidents, such as Dr. Kristin McCabe-Kline, Dr. Sanjay Pattani, Dr. Damian Caraballo, and Dr. Saundra Jackson.

Most importantly, the Academy is designed to meet you where you are. Whether you’re beginning your leadership journey, looking to become more engaged in organized medicine, or seeking to take the next step in an already established leadership career, the program is intentionally flexible to support your individual goals and interests.
