BayCare / St. Joseph’s Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program Update
The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at BayCare Health System / St. Joseph’s Hospital continues to build momentum through Summer and Fall 2025. Our inaugural class of residents began training this summer and has already distinguished themselves both clinically and academically.
At the SAEM Southeastern Regional Meeting, Dr. Daniel May earned first place and Dr. Michael Sencaj earned third place for their resident poster presentations. At the Florida College of Emergency Physicians’ Symposium by the Sea, medical student Tanner Besse achieved first place for his poster presentation, marking a strong start to our program’s scholarly tradition.
Our residents have also stepped into leadership roles at the local and national level. Dr. Giannina Alvarez-Calderon was elected as our representative to the BayCare GME Resident Advisory Council, while Drs. Megan Leslie and Mercedes Erpelding now serve as representatives to EMRA and EMRAF. Their engagement reflects the program’s commitment to fostering leadership and advocacy within emergency medicine.
Educationally, we are planning a series of collaborative events with neighboring residency programs, including Disaster Day, MedWAR, Mock Certifying Exam, and our signature Board Review Carnival. These experiences will broaden training, strengthen regional partnerships, and reinforce our innovative approach to emergency medicine education.
Beyond the hospital, our culture continues to thrive with wellness and social events that bring residents, faculty, and families together. Recent highlights include a cruise around Tampa Bay and a Painting with a Twist outing, with holiday celebrations, Tampa Bay Lightning games, and more on the horizon.

The program has quickly emerged as the flagship residency for BayCare Health System. We are particularly excited to announce a new partnership with Northwestern Medicine, one of the nation’s top medical schools, to further expand our academic collaborations and clinical impact.
We are proud of all that has been accomplished in just the first few months of training and look forward to welcoming our second class of residents in July 2026 from an outstanding pool of applicants. The future is bright for emergency medicine at BayCare and St. Joseph’s Hospital.
