Fall 2023: North Florida

by Chris Sowers, MD, PGY-3 | Oct 12, 2023

Hello from North Florida! Since our last update, the Class of 2023 has graduated with many former residents returning home for full-time EM positions. We wanted to give a special shout out to Johnny Nguyen and Hank Gureasko, ride or die besties affectionately known as “Jank,” who were offered positions to stay on as faculty at NFEM. We also would like to recognize Harsha Palakurty, who has joined Cedars Sinai as a Clinical Informatics Fellow. The rest of the class are spread between Atlanta, New Orleans, Baltimore, and more. We are proud of our entire graduating class (pictured below) and know you’ll do wonderful things in your careers!

We also welcome our new intern class to Gainesville! We were ecstatic to match eight diverse, intelligent colleagues from across the US and Puerto Rico. We have a wealth of experience joining us, including a former army paramedic, pharmacy technician, and flight surgeon. Last month, we enjoyed our annual wellness day welcoming the new class to Florida as we spent the day on the Gulf of Mexico diving for scallops.

Shout out to a few familiar names in our EMRA Florida leadership! Katie Johnson, PGY-3 and Chief Resident, has been elected as Vice President of Programming while Danielle Slowey, PGY-2, has been elected as Vice President of Recruitment. We are quite proud to see our residents taking on local leadership, make sure to say hello at your next EMRA meeting!

Looking ahead, our third-year class is excited for the annual ACEP meeting right around the corner.  Our very own Mariah Cruz has chosen to stay on at North Florida next year to complete a fellowship in Ultrasound. Half of our PGY-3’s have signed contracts for next year as well.We are so excited for the next few months and to see what this year has in store.
