Fall 2023: UF Jacksonville EM Residency

by Erin Baker, DO and Jeanne Rabalais, MD, MHA | Oct 10, 2023

It’s been a while and we have a lot to catch you up on! If you are new here, UF Jacksonville is a 3-year program known for its high-volume,inner-city population that has developed strong, clinically sound physicians for over 45 years. Our program would be nothing without our leadership team. On that note, we are excited to announce our new program director, Dr. Melissa Parsons. Dr. Parsons has been an integral part of our medical education team over the last 7 years, serving as Assistant PD then Associate PD. She has already shown a dedication to teaching and growing our established program and we look forward to evolving, improving and adapting with her. We would also like to say a heartfelt thank you to our immediate past program director, Dr. Dave Caro. Dr. Caro was a member of our program’s leadership for 23 years, being a staple in hundreds of doctors’ training. Though we know he will still be around to help, he will be missed.

As years go by, we do not escape some losses to our program. We want to take a moment to remember two great doctors and educators: Dr. Ann Harwood-Nuss and Dr. Thomas Kunisaki. Dr. Harwood-Nuss had a 30 year history of impacting residents and graduate medical education from being the Emergency Medicine Program Director, Chair of Emergency Medicine, Director of Graduate Medical Education, and Associate Dean of Educational Affairs. She was a pioneer of education and great legacy of mentorship. Dr. Kunisaki was the Medical Director of Florida/USVI Poison Information Center-Jacksonville and Chair of the Emergency Department’s Quality Committee for over 20 years. He was a humble toxicologist who influenced decades of doctors. We appreciate these doctors for their impact and remember them fondly.

We would like to congratulate our recent graduating class! We are pleased that many decided to stay local but also look forward to hearing from their adventures from afar. Following in their legacy is our new intern class full of potential. Welcome class of 2026!

We have had an exciting year and are eager to see what this fall holds for us!
