Fall 2023: Lakeland Regional Health Emergency Medicine Residency Program
We are excited to provide an update about Lakeland Regional Health’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Over the past year we are incredibly proud to have completely filled our inaugural class of 15 interns with an amazing group of physicians. As part of our program, we have been able to provide protected time to attend many of the regional conferences allowing our residents to participate in the Southeast Regional SAEM conference and FCEP’s Symposium by the Sea. We are proud to announce that we took home the first-place trophy for the Southeastern Regional SAEM EM Madness competition.
We havealso welcomed Dr. Ricki Brown as one of our Associate Program Directors. Dr. Brown is an excellent educator and advocate for the EM physician, recently winning the FCEP “Champion of Change” award. Our faculty and residents continue to publish numerous papers with the assistance of our Research Department and team. Our faculty continues to give lectures regionally, nationally, and internationally. We are currently ramping up our audition rotations and our fourth-year medical student clerkship, and welcome interested medical students to apply to our clerkship through VSLO.
A brand-new Lakeland Regional Health Graduate Medical EducationCenter has opened, which is equipped to meet the needs of over 200 residents. The GME center houses a resident library, lounge equipped with 24hr food and coffee stations, study area, numerous sleep rooms, and modernized conference rooms all designed to enhance the resident experience.
Our residents are thriving in their new roles and gaining valuable clinical and procedural experiences. Lakeland Regional Health continues to be in the top busiest Emergency Departments in the country with incredibly high patient acuity. With this clinical experience and faculty support, our intern class has been able to perform high levels of procedures in the emergency department. Within the first three months our interns have logged 127 intubations, 123 medical resuscitations, 83 trauma resuscitations, 53 central lines, 1 pericardiocentesis, 44 tube thoracostomies, in addition to a large variety of additional emergency medicine procedures of this academic year. We are incredibly proud of our residents and faculty and are thankfulto be able to provide this experience to our residents and medical students.
