Fall 2023: Jackson Memorial Hospital

by Isabelle St-Cyr, Program Coordinator | Oct 12, 2023

It is good to be back, EMPulse! We have so much to tell you and our fellow Florida EM residency programs. First of all – have you heard? Jackson Memorial Hospital is getting a brand new ED!  Construction has already started, and we should be able to move into our state-of-the-art facility sometime in 2026.  Of course, we are very excited but for the immediate future, we are focusing on this upcoming recruiting season. Although we remain fully remote for interviews, we look forward to offering a few in-person campus tours and social activities over the next few months.

We had a very successful retreat mid-September – we hope you follow us on our social media!  We posted fun pictures and videos #jacksonmiamiem! In that same vein, we are featuring our class of 2026 one-by-one, including baby pictures and the reason why they chose Jackson.  We love to hear about the commitment to our patient population and how much our residents, faculty and staff play a role into why they chose UM/Jackson. We have an amazing class and are proud to welcome them to the Jackson family.

We would not be able to discuss our program without talking about our class of 2023 graduates. Like proud parents, we were sad to let them go, but delighted with their accomplishments. We had three residents going into fellowship, out of which two went into critical care, and one into health policy and advocacy. Four of our residents remained within our residency circle, either by becoming attendings at our sister institution Holy Cross, or by continuing to work within the Jackson Health System. Others have flown the nest to return to home states or to explore some more, going anywhere from Washington state to Texas, from Indiana to Florida.

Since our last publication, two of our residents made the news; one for saving the life of a man in distress on highway I-95, and one to discuss the dangers of rising temperatures in South Florida. We are also very excited to announce our first annual South Florida Emergency Medicine Critical Care Symposium at Holy Cross Hospital on November 8.  The symposium will feature several EM/Critical Care faculty and we welcome local South Florida EM residencies to attend. But, by far the most newsworthy is the promotion of our associate program director Dr. Mark Supino. Dr. Supino will remain involved in our program but is now officially the department’s associate medical director. As such, he will spearhead operations improvements and will oversee the construction of our new ED.  We will miss our daily banter but are thrilled to have his skills serve the department and the institution.

On that note, we look forward to seeing some of you at ACEP and would like to wish all the Florida programs a happy and healthy holiday (and interview) season!
